If you or your child struggle with reading or reading comprehension, highlighting words can make it easier. It draws your eyes to the important words. It helps with memory and processing. And for those of us with dyslexia, it’s a must. I have textbooks from college that are covered in highlights. It helped with test prep and focus.

Letter H
My mom homeschooled 4 kids with dyslexia. Each of us came with our challenges. My b, p, d, and q loved to flip. I would often write two sentences with just the beginning of one sentence and the end of the second sentence.
Spelling was horrible (I still struggle with it). And reading allowed was horrendous. We all had our issues. Turns out my mom is nothing if not persistent. She refused to let any of us come out the other side without a quality education. Were we always “keeping up” with kids in our grades in school? The short answer is no. But with the things we excelled at we were always ahead. And the things we struggled with we learned eventually.
We were also taught different ways to negotiate our learning difficulties. One of which I used in college was highlighting words. Highlighting words draws our eyes to the highlighting sometimes for the top of a line, an important word, or the next sentence.
The letter H is the eighth letter of the alphabet. Aiden picks home, hit, and hat when he’s asked for an H words.
H sounds like huh.
Activities and ideas:
- Hop with a hat – wear a hat upside down on your head. Hop forward and backward and side to side until the hat falls off. See how many hops you can do.
- Play with a hula hoop.
- Create handprint art with finger paints.
- CVC words with the H sound

Words that start with H
Vocabulary words are a great place to start with your new reader. Open up the dictionary and look for some good H words. Learning a few easy words, such as spelling words or just sight words will aid in the reading process. It’s much easier to read if you know what you’re reading.

As a homeschooling mom, I know one of the homeschool essentials is a good-quality printer with cheap ink. Make sure you look at the cost of the ink before you buy. The printer price isn’t the price to worry about. We have an old one we bought about 10 years ago. Totally worth it. It doesn’t even have to have both print cartilages to print.
