Five Father and Son Activities for Father’s Day

Sharing is caring!

Fathers play a critical role in the growth and raising of boys.  Give them some alone time is something they need and should spend together.  It’s time for a little fun with daddy for Father’s Day.  Try out any of our five father and son activities.

Dads play a huge role in the training of decent young men.  The way they act and view the world can be traced back to male influence in a boy’s life.

For moms out there going it on their own or with under-involved fathers, you should seek out a trusted male influence for your son’s growth and development.  It might be a paster, teacher, uncle, cousin, or grandpa.  Whoever you choose, be cautious so that you don’t offer an abuser easy access to your child (you can’t be too careful).

Male Role Models

In my childhood, my mom was pretty much alone in raising me and my three brothers.  My dad was there, but extremely uninvolved.  My mom found mentors for my brothers from the youth paster and teen group leaders at church to our martial arts instructors, swim team coach, and running coaches.  Those guys deserve a ton of credit in helping shape some amazing men out of my brothers.

My son has my husband (dad) and my brothers in his life. He needs that male boning to help him grow.

As moms, we teach our boys to have heart, be kind, and be gentle souls.  Dads help develop fearlessness, confidence, and competitive nature.

Five Activities for Fathers and Sons

Spending time together is one of the best ways to form a life-long bond between father and son. Here are five activities to try out.

  1. Climb a Tree
  2. Go Fishing or Hiking
  3. Play the Favorite Sport (soccer)
  4. Work on the Car
  5. Race RC Cars

Climb a Tree

Although I taught Aiden how to climb up and down (down being crucial) my husband loves teaching him to go higher.

Being willing to take risks is something I can’t teach him.  All that did for me on the ground taking the picture was get my heart rate up and pray we didn’t need to pay a visit to the ER.

It doesn’t have to stop at climbing.  The tree can become a hang out with a fort or treehouse in the tree.  Or practice the Ninja warrior skills with a few simple hanging objects.

Play the Favorite Sport

It might be football, baseball, or golf.  Playing sports is a fantastic way to harness that competitive nature.

For my family that means soccer.  My husband is from Liberia, Africa.  (So it’s football.)  They love shooting goals and judging the ball (ball tricks).  And there’s no question they both want to win.

Fishing or Hiking Together

Fishing teaches patience.  The art of waiting for something is lost in a world of instant gratification.

If fishing isn’t your thing try hiking. Heading into the woods for an adventure is a perfect way to spend an afternoon. Or a weekend.

Time together talking or not is still a bonding experience.  When the time comes to talk it’s already available.  Being still and quiet, offers time to think away from screens and other distractions too.

Work on the Car

I truly believe every kid (boy and girl) should know the basics on their car.  Knowing how to change the oil, where the spark plugs go, and how to change a tire should be mandatory knowledge before ever driving a car.

My husband is a mechanic.  He can fix or at least find the problem for his car most of the time.  Teaching that skill to his son could help drive Aiden’s career path or just hobit time with a project car in the future.

RC Car Racing

RC Car Racing

Aiden got three RC cars for Christmas. One from dad, one from an uncle, and one from a friend. Aiden and his dad love to race these cars. They charged down the driveway or in the grass of the front yard. Yelling and racing.
