Back to School Homeschool Edition

Sharing is caring!

Have you been out shopping for back to school?  There are some many sales.  Even though we’re homeschooling, we hit the stores in search of school supplies, clothes, and curriculum.  So here’s what we found for our back-to-school shopping.

This is our first back-to-school as a homeschooling family.  Aiden did his first-year preschool with very basic stuff with the goal of learning his alphabet, numbers, shapes, and colors.  This year we’re going to do pre-k and with a little more intensity. As much as my active toddler will allow for. But with a short attention span and mostly the desire to move and do it will as always be a challenge.

We did a little back-to-school shopping so that we had the things we needed at the great prices offered pre-school year.  We were looking for good pens, markers, crayons, scissors, notebooks, and a bunch of craft supplies. He also goes to a new backpack.

Although there’s really no “back” to school when you do something year-round.  It’s more like start a new grade shopping.

Where Should You Go?

I think that depends on what you need.  Amazon has some great back-to-school sales and you don’t have to go into the store.

We love the dollar store.  There’s always a ton of stuff and their back-to-school section is awesome.  Just be careful. Sometimes there’s a cheaper place to look.

Walmart and Target both have some great deals on basics.  Some of the best deals are anywhere between $0.10 and $0.50.

How Much Should You Spend?

We spent about $50 on stuff, clothes, and some curriculum.

Here’s What We Found

But we did a bunch of shopping.  Starting at the local thrift shop.  Which is where we got his Spiderman backpack.  There are a ton back to school specials available.  Including 3 free outfits for school. And tons of really cheap clothes.

We tried to yard sale shop for clothes this year and failed miserably.  So we are happy to have as many savings as we can find at the thrift shop.

Then the dollar store.  I don’t know about you but I usually start with the dollar store.  If you look around there’s usually something that will make your day on the price.  We got lots of paint, craft supplies, and colored pens.

Finally Walmart.  If you love online shopping check out this.  If you use this link you get $10 to shop with.  I’ve been using the grocery pickup and can’t believe how much I save in time and stress not having to walk through the store with a toddler.

He got some of their $0.50 deals and a really cool pizza pencil box which is all metal.  Magnets stick to the pencil box so we may be using it for magnets letters and numbers.

Update: Kindergarten

Our 2019-2020 year is Kindergarten for Aiden. Although he’s a little shy of 5 years old we decided to do Kindergarten. He’s excited to learn more.

We’re using digital programs for homeschoolers. I bought the Build your Bundle option. The material is well laid out.

Kindergarten Bundle

I’m interested in Charlotte Mason-style learning but am unsure if that will be our method quite yet. It’s a ton of reading. With about an hour of lesson time broken up into two sections.

The STEM bundle was an easy choice for my hands-on kid. He loves experiments and building. the best part is it’s good for more than just kindergarten.

And finally, the Kindergarten bundle offers a daily lesson with a simple activity that should be done in half an hour or so. It’s really colorful but pretty basic learning for Aiden.

Between the three we should have a pretty good Kindergarten year.

  1. wow so many things in such a cheap price. i also did back to school shoping which includes schol bag, lunch box and water bottle. stationary items were included in my daughters course list for which i had to pay only.

  2. have a great “back to school”! Glad you got lots of great deals

  3. I love back to school shopping, and finally I have another kiddo starting school this year. I don’t shop online terribly often, but love to find the sales (online or off). The dollar stores, Walmart, and thrift stores are great for prices.

  4. My kiddo is not in school yet, but she will be next year. I am a planner, so we are already prepping for school with preschool readiness (hah is that a thing?) skills. I think we will do a lot of our shopping at Target, and I can admit that it never occurred tome to check the thrift store! That’s definitely some solid advice, so we will have to check it out!

  5. I homeschool my kiddos as well. I just stocked up on supplies by shopping the back-to-school sales. I also picked up some stocking stuffers for Christmas!

  6. I am so excited to buy school stuffs when my baby starts going to school too, it is nice to know that there are online shops now available for convenience and with good discounts and promos. Thank you for sharing this, I also like that metal pencil box.
