Memorial Day with Kids: How to Avoid a Speeding Ticket

Memorial day often means a road trip for many of us. Be it a visit to the grandparents or just a quick vacation before school lets out. We all need a little break from regular life.

But we’ve all been there.  The dreaded red and blue lights in the rearview mirror.  

It’s hard enough to leave your phone alone. But the moment you start driving with kids in the car, there’s a whole new level of distractions and challenges.

Give these ideas a try this for this memorial day and you have a better chance of avoiding a ticket if you follow these 5 simple steps.

Holiday Traffic

There are cops out all over our local highway this weekend.  It’s not surprising. With everyone out trying to get to family or vacations they’re out ticketing.  But what are you supposed to do to avoid a ticket when you’re in the car with a ton of distractions?

Sippy cups hitting the floor or emergency snack break. Kicking the back of the seat. It’s too hot or too cold. After the 5 millionth question and I’m the one asking, “Are we there yet?”. There’s so much one kid can do to drive mom or dad nuts.

Kids in the Car

Even though I have one child but he NEVER stops talking.  He just wants to be a part of everything. That’s a lot sometimes when juggling a map or GPS and out of our local driving.  At home, we know where to slow down or be careful. Out on the road, there’s a lot to think about.

Here are 5 Easy Steps to Avoid a Ticket this Memorial Day (or any time 🙂 ) :

1. Always drive the speed limit!

I know!  What a concept?  But seriously do you drive a little faster then you should?  I know I do. In Pennsylvania, it’s a well-known fact that the cops give a 6 mile an hour variance on your speed for speedometer error.  

Guess what that means?  Everyone drives at least 5 miles an hour over the speed limit.  I’m guilty of that. It’s bad practice. Following the limit lowers your chance of having an accident.  There are companies that actually go around a figure out what the safe speed is for an area and that’s where the sign comes from.  

That’s what you should do.  Not an advisement. It’s actually safer.  None of us want to get into an accident. None of us want a ticket.  Just follow the law.

2. Make the speed limit a game for the kids

Sometimes when you’re out of your local area you may not see a sign.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have more than one set of eyes watching? Tell the kids it’s their job to hunt the speed limit signs.  Whoever shouts it out first gets to pick the next movie or treat.

Make sure your partner is watching too.  If you’re only adult remember that the highway usually drops or rises by 10 so sticking to the speed limit should keep you at least closer to the right speed.  

3.  Keep the headlights on

One thing to think about is there is a lot of places where you need to have your headlights on.  Depending on the state law you could need it through school zones, construction sites, or even when you are on the highway with no barrier between the oncoming traffic.  

So be on the safe side and just keep the lights on.  

4.  Don’t start the car unless everyone’s seat belt is on

If you are driving around without your seatbelt shame on you.  I don’t care how far you are going your kids are in the car. They depend on you to keep them safe.  The last thing you want is to get into an accident and go flying out of the car because you couldn’t be bothered with your seatbelt.  Bye, bye mom or dad.

Be smart about.  No moving unless everyone is bucket up.  There are plenty of click-it or ticket states.  It’s for your safety. Not just to avoid the ticket.

5.  Have extra time

Remember when you go anywhere you always need extra time.  Add kids to the mix and you need a lot of extra time. You should budget at least an extra hour for bathroom breaks alone for a long trip.  Not to mention stretching and eating.

The last thing you want is to have to rush to get where you’re going.  That’s a good way to get a ticket.

It also makes whining more annoying.  The more of a rush you are in.
