Homemade Tuna Salad

Sharing is caring!

Tuna Salad is delicious and as a mom who makes a LOT of PB&J, we need other lunch ideas.  This is one of my favorite recipes from childhood all spring and summer. It’s perfect for a picnic or just something other than peanut butter and jelly.  No mayo required so it’s healthy. It’s perfect as a sandwich or a dip for crackers or chips. Try out this simple summertime recipe.

Fish is a healthy protein option.  You get omega-3 fatty acid when you eat fish. It’s heart healthy and basically a vitamin pill for your brain.  (Mayo Clinic)

Homemade Tuna Salad

My mom used to make tuna salad one a week all spring and summer especially if we’re going somewhere.  When she taught me to make it as a teen, it was one of my favorite lunch ideas for work or school. My son usually chooses to eat it with crackers or chips while I prefer bread or pita.

Of course, I’ve made a few changes.  You’ll need some pantry staples, some veggies, and yogurt.  I love that you can hide a ton of veggies in this without overwhelming the tuna.

It’s a cheap lunch option that you can make ahead of time and keep for a few days in the refrigerator.  I’ve had it up to 5 days later, however, I don’t recommend that long. I would say 3 days at the most.

Tuna Salad Ingredients

Directions

You’ll need a medium-size bowl and a mixing spoon.  Drain your tuna and put it into the bowl. I prefer the shredded tuna, like Bumble Bee (chunk light tuna in water).  Albacore tuna is a little hard to use. You’ll need to break it up a little before moving to the next step.

Mix in the yogurt slowly.  You may need a little more or less than the 2 tablespoons.  You’re looking for a consistency that you like.

Now comes the seasoning.  I like yellow mustard and black pepper.  You can use a lot of both or a little depending on your taste.  I add enough black pepper that I can see the flakes of pepper. And enough mustard to change the color of the tuna salad.  It’s not always as strong if I making it specifically to feed to Aiden.

Garlic powder and salt are also good choices if you want more seasoning.

Finally, slice up some pickles and onion to mix in.  I like little chunks. Something smaller for Aiden.

Tuna Salad Veggies

I like to add a few extra veggies and cheese.  They aren’t necessarily something you have to add.  It does make the salad even better. Small chunks or shredded veggies.  The more you add the more salad you’ll have.

Tuna Salad Options

Once you have your tuna salad you can try it out in a sandwich or with crackers.  It can be your protein in a green salad. You’ve got lots of choices.
