Sharing is caring!

The first week of April is library week.  We go to the local library at least once a week for storytime.  It’s a great place to meet new people and see old friends. There are so many things to do and learn at the library.  It might be time to add it to your weekly routine. After all, there’s no downside to raising a reader.

Growing up, I spent countless hours with my nose in a book and that’s one thing I want for my own son.  Socializing too.  There are always lots of nice kids to play with.  So every Monday we’re at the Bellefonte library for toddler story time.  We sometimes hit other days too but it’s part of the week’s routine for Mondays. It’s part of homeschooling for us too.  You can learn so much with a simple love of reading.

We go to storytime to hear one of the librarians, Miss Laura, reader 3 to 5 books and sing songs and play with a ton of kids.  Miss Laura is a former Montessori teacher so she always picks a theme and has learning weaved in.

After the stories, there’s plenty of time to play and socialize with the other kids.  Aiden gets to work on sharing and I get to talk to other parents. It’s completely a win, win.  Most parents stay for a half an hour afterward but we usually longer.

We love “Pete the Cat”, “I’m Fast” by Kate & Jim McMullan, and “Otto the Boy Who Loved Cars”.  So when it quiets down we usually read a book or two more. Then build towers to knock down, play trains or kitchen.  Then head to the park or other outside activities.

I know each library is different so you may have to go outside of your town to find a good program.  It’s completely worth the time and effort. They could have STEM projects, homeschooling groups, and even movie nights.  Not to mention reading programs where your child can earn free books for reading.

Also (no soapbox…) please remember that many of our local libraries are non-profit and low funded, so if you love it, donate.  Time or resources, they can always use help. Especially if they are one of your go-to spots.

  1. Sounds like a great way to spend some time out with your children. Storytelling is great for children and even more fun in a group.

  2. It sounds like your son enjoys this activity! It’s great that you found one that you really like. We didn’t do ours through the library but there are lots of cool places to expose your child to books! Thanks to sharing!

  3. This looks like a super fun library. I used to love to go to the library as a child. This post makes me want to go now lol. I would love to just spend a few hours browsing.

  4. My oldest son loved story time at the library. My little one is a bit too little for it yet, but we will definitely be doing it again when he is a little bigger.

Aww sounds like a lovely way to spend an hour or two! I loved libraries and reading when I was a kid. Lovely, cute pics too!

  6. This sounds amazing. A nice place to spend time with the kids, the library is so cool and spacious

  7. What a fun-looking local library! The kids will definitely enjoy going there.

  8. Reading this definitely brings back so much memories! When I was younger, I used to spend every Saturday in the library!

  9. Reading to young children or expose them with stories book are one of the best habit we can help to cultivate. It brings so much success if we start to do it early and an hour a day.

  10. I believe that the joy of the library is important for the children to discover, and consequently for us to be great. Immerse yourself in reading as the most healthy and fun passion they can have!

  11. I used to do story time with my daughter when she was younger. She LOVED it. These days she likes to be the master of her own destiny (stories) so we tend to hit the park and then do loads of stories at home

  12. Love how you encourage your kids to love reading, because I think it is a very important trait. I wished there were places like this (that have kids story time program) in my time, but growing up in Indonesia we didn’t have it. I can only imagine how fun it would be.
Kudos for you, your local library and people like Miss Laura!

  13. We love going to the library for kids story time. They have a big pirate ship that the kids can play in as well. We haven’t gone in a while though…schedules been crazy since new baby, but I look forward to doing it again this fall.

  14. My daughter and I love reading and made story-time a part of our regular weekly schedule. The local library is a great place for reading adventures and Barnes&Noble has a wonderful Saturday story-telling program.

  15. Oh my word. When I was young I would spend every Saturday with my mom at the library (she was a non book reader, so she went for me). I never did story time with my little ones, we moved around a lot. Somehow I got lucky and they both enjoy reading anyways.

  16. My twin toddlers and I had our very first story time today, alone. They’ve participated in a few before but we hadn’t tried it alone. I must say, I think it will be a game-changer in our day since it’s so interactive for them.

Exactly! We’re there once at least a week because it’s so much fun and so many different things to do. It’s also so nice to be there with other parents! You can always have a little help from another mom. 🙂

  17. We are just starting to visit the library! It’s amazing how much better is has gotten after just 3 visits. I have 3 under 5 so at first it was just not worth the stress of going and trying to keep everyone from pulling out books or running in 3 directions. Now they are much more used to how we check out books, use quiet voices, and such. It’s a great resource when I’m brave enough to go!

  18. What a great place to spend time in for kids! We enjoy going but I haven’ taken the kids in forever. Your post just motivated me to make a plan to go more often, thank you 🙂

  19. We love going to our library as well. Ours is the best I have ever seen. It has a room built like a mini house for kids and tons of stem and imaginative play stuff. Their favorite part is picking out a book at the end ro take home:)

That sounds amazing! The special room probably helps keep the rest of the library quiet for the adults that way too. 🙂
